The Former Arisugawa-no-miya Residence is a historic imperial residence located beside Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. It once served as the Kyoto residence of the Arisugawa-no-miya family, one of Japan’s most distinguished imperial branches.

Although the interior is generally closed to the public, the elegant gate and traditional architecture offer a glimpse into the lifestyle of Japan’s imperial family during the late Edo and Meiji periods. It is a worthwhile stop for visitors exploring Kyoto’s imperial district.

History

The Arisugawa-no-miya family was one of the four prestigious imperial branches that supported the Japanese Imperial Household. Their Kyoto residence played an important role as a place for official visits and ceremonies connected with the Imperial Court.

Following the modernization of Japan, the residence remained associated with the Imperial Household before coming under government protection. Today it survives as one of the few remaining imperial residences in Kyoto.
