Takaragaike Park

Tourist Spot

Takaragaike Park is one of Kyoto’s largest public parks, centered around the scenic Takaragaike Pond in the northern part of the city. Surrounded by forests and walking trails, the park offers a peaceful escape from the busy streets of central Kyoto and is a favorite destination for walking, jogging, birdwatching, and family recreation.

The park is also home to the Kyoto International Conference Center, creating a unique landscape where beautiful natural scenery and award-winning modern architecture exist side by side.

History

Takaragaike originally served as an agricultural reservoir supplying water to nearby farmland. During the postwar redevelopment of Kyoto, the surrounding area was transformed into a large public park while preserving the pond and its natural environment.

The opening of the Kyoto International Conference Center in 1966 established the area as an important center for both international exchange and recreation. Over the years, additional facilities such as children’s playgrounds, sports grounds, and walking trails have made the park one of Kyoto’s most popular outdoor destinations.

Today, Takaragaike Park remains an important green space where visitors can enjoy nature while exploring northern Kyoto.
