Okochi Sanso Garden

Okochi Sanso Garden is a stunning Japanese stroll garden created by Denjiro Okochi, one of Japan’s most famous film actors of the early Showa era. Located at the northern end of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, it offers a peaceful escape from the crowds.

The spacious garden features winding paths, traditional tea houses, beautiful seasonal landscapes, and panoramic views of Kyoto, the Hozu Gorge, and the surrounding mountains. Admission also includes matcha green tea and a traditional Japanese sweet.

History

Construction of Okochi Sanso began in the early Showa Period, with actor Denjiro Okochi personally overseeing the design for nearly 30 years. Rather than building a luxurious residence, he devoted much of his fortune to creating a garden that blended harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.

Today, the estate remains one of Kyoto’s finest examples of a modern Japanese strolling garden and continues to welcome visitors from around the world.

Many visitors finish the Bamboo Grove and turn back without reaching Okochi Sanso Garden. Continuing just a few more minutes rewards you with one of the quietest and most beautiful gardens in Kyoto.

Plan to spend about an hour exploring the grounds and relaxing with the included matcha tea. Comfortable shoes are recommended because the garden includes several gentle slopes.
