Rakushisha is a historic thatched cottage in Kyoto’s Sagano district, best known as the former retreat of the haiku poet Mukai Kyorai, one of Matsuo Basho’s closest disciples. Basho himself stayed here and wrote parts of his famous travel diary Saga Nikki.
Surrounded by a peaceful garden, Rakushisha offers visitors a chance to experience the quiet atmosphere that inspired some of Japan’s greatest literary works. It is an ideal stop for those interested in Japanese poetry, history, and traditional culture.
History
Rakushisha was originally the country retreat of Mukai Kyorai, a leading disciple of Matsuo Basho. Its name, meaning “The Cottage of Fallen Persimmons,” comes from a story that all the persimmons in the garden fell during a storm before they could be harvested.
In 1691, Basho stayed here while writing Saga Nikki (“Saga Diary”), one of his best-known prose works. Today, the cottage continues to attract literature lovers from Japan and around the world.
