The Saga Toriimoto Preservation District is one of Kyoto’s best-preserved historic streetscapes. Once a lively gateway town for pilgrims visiting Atago Shrine, it still features traditional townhouses, thatched-roof buildings, and a peaceful atmosphere that reflects old Kyoto.
Located northwest of central Arashiyama, the district offers a quieter alternative to the area’s busiest attractions. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk while discovering the history, architecture, and rural charm of the Sagano countryside.
History
Saga Toriimoto developed as a gateway village for worshippers making their way to Atago Shrine. During the Edo Period, inns and teahouses lined the road, welcoming thousands of pilgrims each year.
Because much of the historic townscape has survived, the district was designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the Japanese government in 1979.
