Kotoin Temple (Daitoku-ji)

Temple

Kotoin is one of the most celebrated sub-temples of Daitoku-ji, founded in 1601 by the distinguished samurai and tea master Hosokawa Tadaoki (Sansai) in memory of his father, Hosokawa Fujitaka (Yusai). Renowned for its refined simplicity, the temple beautifully reflects the aesthetics of Zen Buddhism and the Japanese tea ceremony.

The temple is especially admired for its picturesque stone pathway lined with maple trees and bamboo. Throughout the seasons, this approach transforms dramatically—from the vibrant green of early summer to brilliant autumn colors—making Kotoin one of Kyoto’s most photographed Zen temples.

Please note: Kotoin is currently closed to the public for long-term conservation and restoration work. Visitors should check the latest reopening information before planning a visit.

History

Kotoin was established in 1601 by Hosokawa Tadaoki, an influential feudal lord and one of the celebrated Seven Sages of the Tea Ceremony, who studied under Sen no Rikyu. He built the temple as the family temple of the Hosokawa clan and as a memorial for his father, Hosokawa Fujitaka, a renowned scholar and military leader.

The temple also preserves the graves of members of the Hosokawa family, including Tadaoki and his wife, the famous Christian noblewoman Hosokawa Gracia. Its architecture and gardens reflect the elegant taste of samurai culture combined with the understated beauty of the tea ceremony, making Kotoin an important site in the history of Japanese aesthetics.
