Kyoto City Zoo is Japan’s second-oldest zoo, having opened in 1903. Located in Kyoto’s cultural Okazaki district, it is surrounded by major attractions such as Heian Shrine, the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, and the Lake Biwa Canal Museum. Combining history, conservation, and education, the zoo is a popular destination for families as well as animal lovers.

The zoo is home to more than 100 animal species, including Asian elephants, western lowland gorillas, lions, giraffes, red pandas, and penguins. Modern habitats such as the Gorilla Forest and Elephant Forest are designed to encourage natural animal behavior, allowing visitors to observe wildlife in spacious, enriching environments.

History

Kyoto City Zoo was established by Kyoto City in 1903, making it the second-oldest zoo in Japan after Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. It was created to promote public education and provide recreational opportunities for local residents.

During the 2010s, the zoo underwent extensive renovations that introduced larger, more naturalistic enclosures while emphasizing animal welfare and conservation. Today, it continues to play an important role in wildlife education, breeding programs, and environmental awareness.
