Okazaki Canal

The Okazaki Canal is a scenic section of the historic Lake Biwa Canal that flows through Kyoto’s cultural district of Okazaki. History

The Okazaki Canal forms part of the Lake Biwa Canal, completed in 1890 as one of Japan’s most ambitious civil engineering projects of the Meiji era.

The canal was constructed under Governor Kitagaki Kunimichi and designed by the young engineer Tanabe Sakuro. It supplied Kyoto with water for transportation, hydroelectric power, irrigation, and daily life, playing a vital role in the city’s modernization after the Meiji Restoration.

The Okazaki district later developed into Kyoto’s premier cultural area, home to museums, temples, gardens, and public facilities that continue to attract visitors today.
