Miyake Hachimangu Shrine

Miyake Hachimangu Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located in the Kamitakano area of northern Kyoto. Dedicated to Hachiman, the guardian deity of protection, the shrine is especially famous as a place to pray for children’s health and protection from childhood illnesses, making it one of Japan’s best-known shrines for this unique blessing.

History

According to tradition, Miyake Hachimangu Shrine was founded in 859 by imperial order of Emperor Seiwa.

The deity Hachiman was enshrined from Usa Hachimangu Shrine in Kyushu to protect the northeastern direction of Kyoto and safeguard the capital. Because the shrine stood along the route to Mount Hiei, it attracted many pilgrims throughout history.

During the Edo period, it became widely known as the “Mushi Hachiman” shrine, where families prayed for children suffering from night crying, nervous conditions, and illnesses. Today, it continues to be a popular destination for prayers related to childbirth, newborn blessings, Shichi-Go-San, and children’s healthy growth.
