Ota Shrine is a historic subsidiary shrine of Kamigamo Shrine located in northern Kyoto. Best known for the spectacular Ota-no-Sawa Iris Marsh, the shrine is home to one of Japan’s finest natural colonies of rabbit-ear irises (kakitsubata).
Each May, approximately 25,000 iris plants bloom across the marsh, creating a breathtaking purple landscape. Designated as a National Natural Monument, the site has inspired poets and visitors for centuries and remains one of Kyoto’s most beautiful early summer destinations.
History
Although its exact founding date is unknown, Ota Shrine is listed in the Engishiki, a 10th-century register of important shrines, demonstrating a history of more than a thousand years.
The shrine enshrines Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto, the Shinto goddess associated with performing arts, happiness, fertility, and prosperity. As a subsidiary shrine of Kamigamo Shrine, Ota Shrine has long played an important role in the religious traditions of northern Kyoto, including ceremonies connected with the famous Aoi Matsuri.
The shrine’s iris marsh, known as Ota-no-Sawa, has been celebrated since ancient times. Its blooming irises appear in classical Japanese literature, including The Tales of Ise, and today the marsh is protected as a National Natural Monument.
