Kaju-ji Temple

Kaju-ji is the head temple of the Yamashina branch of Shingon Buddhism and one of Kyoto’s historic Monzeki temples, traditionally associated with the imperial family. Located in the quiet Yamashina district, the temple is renowned for its elegant pond garden centered around Himuro Pond, one of the area’s finest examples of classical Japanese landscape design.

History

Kaju-ji was founded in 900 by Emperor Daigo in memory of his mother, Fujiwara no Inshi. The temple takes its name from her posthumous Buddhist title, and it soon became closely associated with the Fujiwara clan.

During the Kamakura period and later, Kaju-ji developed into a prestigious Monzeki temple, where members of the imperial family and aristocracy often served as abbots. The temple also became the headquarters of the Yamashina branch of Shingon Buddhism.

The beautiful Himuro Pond, which forms the heart of the temple grounds, dates back to the Heian period and has long been admired for its graceful scenery. Kaju-ji also maintains historical connections with the development of Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement), contributing to Kyoto’s rich artistic heritage.
