Zuishin-in Temple

Zuishin-in is the head temple of the Shingon Zentsuji school and one of Kyoto’s most elegant temple complexes. Founded in 991, it is best known for its association with the legendary poet and beauty Ono no Komachi, whose life and literary legacy continue to inspire visitors today.

The temple combines historic architecture with beautifully maintained gardens, making it an attractive destination throughout the year. In spring, the Komachi Plum Grove bursts into bloom, while autumn brings brilliant maple leaves. The temple has also become famous for its vibrant modern fusuma paintings depicting the life of Ono no Komachi.

History

Zuishin-in was founded in 991 by the eminent Shingon monk Ningai, who later became the fifth chief priest of Daigo-ji Temple. The temple developed into an important Monzeki Temple, where members of the imperial family and aristocracy traditionally served as abbots.

For centuries, Zuishin-in has been closely associated with Ono no Komachi, one of Japan’s greatest waka poets and one of the legendary Six Poetic Geniuses (Rokkasen). Although the historical details remain uncertain, local tradition holds that Komachi spent her later years in this area. The temple preserves several sites connected with her legend, including a cosmetic well and a memorial mound.

In recent years, the brilliantly colored fusuma paintings titled “Gokusaishiki Ume-niou Komachi-ezu” have become one of the temple’s most popular attractions, blending traditional themes with contemporary artistic expression.
