Uji Shrine

Shrine

Uji Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located beside the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ujigami Shrine in the heart of Uji. Dedicated to Prince Uji no Wakiiratsuko, the shrine has long served as one of the principal guardian shrines of the Uji area and is closely connected with the region’s ancient history.

The shrine is especially beloved for its charming “Mikaeri Usagi” (Looking-Back Rabbit), a rabbit that, according to legend, guided the prince through the area. Today, rabbits appear throughout the shrine as symbols of guidance, good fortune, academic success, and safe journeys.

History

Although the exact date of its foundation is unknown, Uji Shrine is believed to have existed since before the Heian period. Originally, it formed a single shrine complex together with the neighboring Ujigami Shrine. The two shrines were officially separated during the Meiji period following the government’s policy of separating Shinto and Buddhism.

The shrine enshrines Prince Uji no Wakiiratsuko, a son of Emperor Ojin. According to historical tradition, the prince became involved in a succession dispute but chose to sacrifice his own life rather than cause conflict among his brothers. His virtue earned him lasting respect, and he came to be worshipped as the guardian deity of Uji.

A local legend tells that a rabbit repeatedly looked back while guiding the prince through unfamiliar paths. This story gave rise to the shrine’s famous Looking-Back Rabbit, which has become its beloved symbol.
