Enko-ji Temple

Temple

Enko-ji Temple is a tranquil Zen temple in Kyoto’s Ichijoji district, celebrated for its beautiful gardens and spectacular autumn foliage. Belonging to the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, the temple offers visitors an elegant combination of traditional landscape design, bamboo groves, and peaceful architecture. While it is especially famous for its vibrant maple leaves in autumn, the fresh greenery of spring is equally captivating.

The temple is also historically significant as one of the earliest centers of education and printing established by Tokugawa Ieyasu. Today, it attracts visitors interested in Zen culture, Japanese gardens, and the history of publishing in Japan.

History

Enko-ji was founded in 1601 by Tokugawa Ieyasu as a center for Confucian learning and one of Japan’s earliest educational institutions. The temple originally stood in Fushimi, where wooden movable-type printing was introduced to publish important Chinese and Japanese texts.

In 1667, the temple was relocated to its present site in Ichijoji. Enko-ji continues to preserve its educational legacy while also serving as a distinguished Zen temple. The temple grounds include a small shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, reflecting its close historical connection with the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.
