Hokyo-ji Monzeki Temple

Hokyo-ji Monzeki Temple is a historic imperial convent in northern Kyoto, affectionately known as the Temple of Dolls. For centuries, imperial princesses and noblewomen served as its head priests, making it one of Kyoto’s most distinguished monzeki temples.

The temple is especially famous for its remarkable collection of traditional Japanese dolls, including elegant Imperial Palace dolls (Gosho Ningyo) and elaborate Hina dolls. History

Founded in 1387, Hokyo-ji gradually became an imperial convent closely connected with the Japanese Imperial Family. Throughout the Muromachi and Edo periods, many imperial princesses entered the temple, strengthening its status as one of Kyoto’s leading monzeki temples.

Over the centuries, the Imperial Court presented the temple with exquisite dolls and ceremonial objects. These collections eventually earned Hokyo-ji the nickname Temple of Dolls, preserving an important aspect of Kyoto’s aristocratic culture.
