Horin-ji Temple is a historic Buddhist temple located on the hillside south of Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama. It is widely known as “Saga no Kokuzo-san” and is especially famous for the traditional coming-of-age visit called Jusan Mairi.
The temple offers a quieter experience than the busy north side of Arashiyama, along with beautiful views over Togetsukyo Bridge, the surrounding mountains, and the Kyoto cityscape.
History
Horin-ji is said to have been founded in 713 during the Nara Period. It was later restored by Dosho, a disciple of Kobo Daishi Kukai.
The temple’s principal image, Kokuzo Bosatsu, has long been worshipped as a deity of wisdom, memory, and learning. This belief gave rise to the Jusan Mairi tradition, in which children around the age of 13 visit the temple to pray for wisdom and good fortune.

Located within the temple grounds, this small shrine is dedicated to electricity, telecommunications, and modern technology, attracting people from IT and communications fields.
Quiet South Arashiyama Atmosphere
Despite being close to Togetsukyo Bridge, the temple remains relatively peaceful and offers a calm break from the main tourist area.
Visit Tips
To reach Horin-ji, cross Togetsukyo Bridge to the south side of Arashiyama and walk uphill for a few minutes. Comfortable shoes are recommended because the approach includes steps and slopes.
The temple is especially busy during the Jusan Mairi season, but at other times it is usually much quieter than the central Arashiyama attractions. It pairs well with Togetsukyo Bridge, Arashiyama Park, and Hankyu Arashiyama Station.
