Jizo-in Temple, affectionately known as the “Bamboo Temple,” is a peaceful Zen temple in Kyoto’s Nishikyo Ward. Hidden among lush bamboo groves, it offers visitors a tranquil alternative to the more crowded bamboo forests of nearby Arashiyama. The gentle sound of swaying bamboo and the temple’s serene atmosphere create an ideal setting for quiet reflection.
The temple’s elegant gardens, traditional buildings, and bamboo-lined approach embody the simplicity and harmony of Zen aesthetics. Throughout the year, the changing seasons provide beautiful scenery, from fresh green bamboo in spring to colorful autumn foliage.
History
Jizo-in was founded in 1367 by Hosokawa Yoriyuki in memory of Ashikaga Yoshiakira, the second shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate. The temple belongs to the Rinzai school (Muso branch) and traces its spiritual lineage to the celebrated Zen master Muso Soseki through Mumu Issei (Shukyo Zenji), its founding priest.
Although the temple suffered damage during the Onin War (1467–1477), it was later restored and gradually became known for its beautiful bamboo grove. Today, Jizo-in is admired as one of Kyoto’s finest hidden Zen temples, preserving both its historical heritage and peaceful natural surroundings.
