Kōdai-ji Temple

Temple

Kōdai-ji Temple is one of the most beautiful Zen temples in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district. Founded by Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the temple was built in memory of her husband and is renowned for its elegant gardens, historic architecture, and peaceful bamboo grove.

The temple grounds offer a relaxing atmosphere where visitors can stroll through landscaped gardens, admire traditional buildings, and experience the beauty of each season. Seasonal evening illuminations transform the gardens into a magical setting, making Kōdai-ji one of Kyoto’s most popular nighttime attractions.

History

Kōdai-ji was established in 1606 by Nene, the widow of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, with financial support from Tokugawa Ieyasu. It was built as a memorial temple to honor Hideyoshi following his death.

Today, the temple belongs to the Kennin-ji branch of the Rinzai Zen sect. Several buildings and decorative works from the Momoyama period remain, including the famous Kōdai-ji Makie lacquer art, an important example of Japanese decorative craftsmanship.
