Saimyo-ji is a historic Shingon Buddhist temple located in the Takao district of northwestern Kyoto. Together with Jingo-ji and Kozan-ji, it forms the celebrated Three Temples of Takao (Takao Sanbi), an area famous for some of Kyoto’s earliest and most spectacular autumn foliage.
Surrounded by forested mountains and the clear waters of the Kiyotaki River, Saimyo-ji offers a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts with Kyoto’s busier sightseeing areas. Its elegant buildings and vibrant seasonal scenery make it a rewarding destination throughout the year.
History
Saimyo-ji was founded in 824 by Chisen Daitoku, a disciple of Kukai (Kobo Daishi), shortly after the establishment of nearby Jingo-ji. Like many temples in Kyoto, it suffered severe damage during the Onin War in the 15th century.
The temple was revived during the Edo period through the patronage of Keishoin, the mother of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the fifth Tokugawa shogun. The present Main Hall dates from this reconstruction and enshrines an Important Cultural Property, a standing statue of Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Buddha).
Today, Saimyo-ji remains one of the quieter temples of the Takao area, preserving the peaceful atmosphere of a traditional mountain monastery.
