Sanko-ji Temple

Temple

Sanko-ji is a peaceful Tendai Buddhist temple located on the mountainside of Kyoto’s Nishiyama range. Often called one of the finest autumn foliage temples in western Kyoto, it offers spectacular views over the Kyoto Basin together with a quiet atmosphere rarely found at the city’s more famous temples.

Although beautiful throughout the year, Sanko-ji is especially admired during autumn, when brilliant maple leaves surround the temple buildings. Its secluded location near Yoshimine-dera makes it an ideal destination for visitors seeking a more tranquil experience of Kyoto’s mountain temples.

History

According to temple tradition, Sanko-ji was founded in 806 by Saicho, the founder of the Tendai school of Buddhism in Japan. The temple takes its name from the Sanko-sho (Three-Pronged Vajra) that Saicho is said to have brought back from China and enshrined at this sacred site.

Like many temples in Kyoto, Sanko-ji suffered repeated destruction during periods of warfare, including the Onin War, and was later rebuilt. For centuries, it has remained an important place of Buddhist practice in the Nishiyama mountains.

Together with Yoshimine-dera and Jurin-ji, Sanko-ji has traditionally been regarded as one of the Three Sacred Temples of Nishiyama, preserving the spiritual heritage of western Kyoto.
