Shinnyo-do Temple (Shinsho Gokuraku-ji)

Shinnyo-do Temple, officially known as Shinsho Gokuraku-ji, is a peaceful Tendai Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto. Although it is best known for its spectacular autumn colors, the temple offers a relaxing atmosphere throughout the year.

Located on a quiet hillside near the Philosopher’s Path, Shinnyo-do features spacious grounds, historic wooden buildings, and beautiful gardens. Its tranquil setting makes it a perfect destination for visitors looking to experience a less crowded side of Kyoto.

History

The temple was founded in 984 by the Tendai monk Kaisan. Its principal image of Amida Buddha is traditionally believed to have been brought from Mount Hiei by the famous monk Ennin.

After suffering damage during periods of war, including the Onin War, the temple was relocated and rebuilt at its present location during the Edo Period, where it continues to serve as an important place of worship.

Autumn is the most popular season to visit, but Shinnyo-do is generally less crowded than many of Kyoto’s famous temples. Early morning visits provide the most peaceful experience.

The temple is easily combined with a walk along the Philosopher’s Path, Honen-in, and Ginkaku-ji, making it an excellent stop on a full-day sightseeing route through eastern Kyoto.
