Shoden-ji Temple

Temple

Shoden-ji is a tranquil Rinzai Zen temple located in Kyoto’s Nishigamo district. Best known for its elegant dry landscape garden and magnificent borrowed view of Mount Hiei, the temple is considered one of Kyoto’s finest hidden garden destinations.

Far from the city’s busiest tourist sites, Shoden-ji offers visitors a peaceful Zen atmosphere where the beauty of nature and traditional Japanese garden design can be appreciated in every season.

History

Shoden-ji was originally founded in 1268 by the Zen monk Togan Ean. Like many Kyoto temples, it was destroyed during the Onin War before being rebuilt in 1613 with the support of the powerful Maeda clan, rulers of the Kaga Domain.

The temple’s celebrated front garden is traditionally attributed to the renowned landscape designer Kobori Enshu. Featuring carefully clipped azaleas, white gravel, and the distant silhouette of Mount Hiei as borrowed scenery, the garden is regarded as a masterpiece of early Edo-period Zen landscape design.

Shoden-ji also preserves a memorial dedicated to Maeda Toshinaga, reflecting the temple’s long-standing relationship with the influential Maeda family.
