Shorin-ji Temple

Temple

Shorin-ji Temple is a charming sub-temple of Tofuku-ji Temple, famous for its devotion to Bishamonten, the Buddhist guardian deity associated with victory, protection, and good fortune. Often called the “Bishamonten Temple of Tofuku-ji,” it has become one of Kyoto’s most popular hidden temples thanks to its beautiful floral water basins and tranquil gardens.

Although modest in size, Shorin-ji offers visitors a delightful combination of Zen culture, seasonal flowers, and artistic displays. Its peaceful atmosphere makes it an ideal stop for those wishing to explore beyond the main precincts of Tofuku-ji.

History

Shorin-ji was founded in 1550 by the Zen monk Kogaku Reisho as one of the sub-temples of Tofuku-ji. The principal deity, Bishamonten, has long been worshipped as the guardian of Tofuku-ji and is revered throughout Japan as a protector who grants victory, success, prosperity, and protection from misfortune.

In recent years, the temple has gained widespread popularity for its beautifully decorated hanachozu (floral purification basins), which change with the seasons and have attracted photographers and visitors from across Japan while preserving the temple’s peaceful Zen atmosphere.
