Statue of Takayama Hikokuro

Tourist Spot

The Statue of Takayama Hikokuro stands at the eastern end of Sanjo Ohashi Bridge in central Kyoto. It depicts the famous Edo-period scholar Takayama Hikokuro kneeling respectfully toward the Kyoto Imperial Palace, expressing his devotion to the Emperor.

Often nicknamed the “kneeling statue,” it commemorates one of the pioneers of the Sonno (Revere the Emperor) movement, whose ideas later influenced many leaders of the Meiji Restoration.

Today, the statue is both a historical monument and one of Kyoto’s best-known meeting places.

History

Takayama Hikokuro (1747–1793) was a scholar and patriot from present-day Gunma Prefecture.

During his travels throughout Japan, he frequently visited Kyoto and became famous for kneeling in reverence toward the Imperial Palace. His devotion to the Emperor inspired later figures involved in the movement that eventually led to the Meiji Restoration.

The present bronze statue was erected in 1928 and faithfully recreates his iconic posture facing the Imperial Palace.
