Hanamikoji Street is the heart of Kyoto’s famous Gion entertainment district and one of the city’s most iconic historic streets. Stretching from Shijō Street to Kennin-ji Temple, it is lined with beautifully preserved wooden townhouses, exclusive restaurants, traditional teahouses, and elegant inns that preserve the atmosphere of old Kyoto.
In the evening, lanterns illuminate the street and visitors may catch a glimpse of geiko or maiko on their way to appointments. The combination of traditional architecture and living cultural heritage makes Hanamikoji one of the most memorable places to experience Kyoto.
History
Hanamikoji developed during the early Edo period as the main street of Gion’s entertainment district, which grew around Yasaka Shrine. Over the centuries, it became the center of Gion Kobu, Kyoto’s most prestigious geisha district, where traditional performing arts continue to flourish today.
Strict preservation efforts have helped maintain the historic appearance of the street, allowing visitors to experience one of Japan’s finest surviving examples of a traditional hanamachi (geisha district).
