Chourakukan

Chourakukan is one of Kyoto’s finest examples of Western-style architecture from the Meiji era. Completed in 1909 as the private residence and guesthouse of tobacco entrepreneur Kichibei Murai, the mansion welcomed members of the imperial family, diplomats, and distinguished guests from around the world. Today, it operates as a luxury hotel, restaurant, and café while preserving its remarkable historic interiors.

Unlike Kyoto’s famous temples and shrines, Chourakukan offers visitors a glimpse into the city’s modernization during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its richly decorated rooms feature a fascinating blend of Rococo, Renaissance, Art Nouveau, and other European architectural styles, making it a must-visit destination for architecture enthusiasts.

History

Chourakukan was commissioned by Kichibei Murai, one of Japan’s most successful tobacco entrepreneurs, as both his residence and an elegant reception hall for important guests. The building was designed by the American architect James McDonald Gardiner, who also designed several notable Western-style buildings in Kyoto.

During the Meiji and Taisho periods, the mansion became one of Kyoto’s leading social venues, hosting members of the imperial family, politicians, and international visitors. Today, it is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Kyoto City and remains one of the city’s most significant examples of early modern architecture.
