Shimadzu Corporation Kawaramachi Annex

The Shimadzu Corporation Kawaramachi Annex is a distinguished example of early Showa-period commercial architecture located on Kawaramachi Street in central Kyoto. Completed in 1927, it was designed by renowned architects Goichi Takeda and Yoshio Arakawa, two leading figures in the development of modern architecture in Kyoto.

Originally built as a showroom and business office for Shimadzu Corporation, the building reflects a refined modernist aesthetic through its balanced proportions, vertical windows, restrained ornamentation, and carefully composed stone façade.

Today, it remains an important reminder of Kyoto’s role as a center of scientific innovation and industrial development during the early twentieth century.

History

Founded in Kyoto in 1875, Shimadzu Corporation became one of Japan’s leading manufacturers of scientific, medical, and analytical instruments.

The Kawaramachi Annex was completed in 1927 to serve as the company’s sales and exhibition facility. Architect Goichi Takeda, a pioneer of modern Japanese architecture and professor at Kyoto Imperial University, collaborated with Yoshio Arakawa to create a dignified yet modern corporate building that reflected the company’s technological leadership.

The building continues to stand as an outstanding example of Kyoto’s early modern commercial architecture and industrial heritage.
