Tensho-ji Temple, officially known as Mandarasan Taimain Tensho-ji, is a Jodo Buddhist temple located along Teramachi Street in central Kyoto. Founded in 1577, it belongs to the Chion-in lineage of the Jodo sect.
Despite being situated in the heart of downtown Kyoto, the temple offers a peaceful atmosphere and is especially famous for its magnificent white magnolia tree, which blooms from late March to early April. During this short season, the temple becomes a popular destination for photographers and flower enthusiasts.
The temple also enshrines Yamato Tenkawa Benzaiten, a deity associated with music, the arts, learning, and prosperity.
History
Tensho-ji was founded in 1577 by the Buddhist priest Ganyo Dosan.
Affiliated with Chion-in, the head temple of the Jodo sect, Tensho-ji has served the local community for more than four centuries.
The present Main Hall was rebuilt in 1880 during the Meiji period. Today, visitors come not only to pray but also to admire the temple’s beautiful magnolia blossoms and the Benzaiten shrine within the grounds.
