Togetsukyo Bridge is the iconic symbol of Arashiyama and one of Kyoto’s most famous landmarks. Spanning the Katsura River, the bridge offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and is a favorite destination throughout the year.
Although the current bridge is built with reinforced concrete, its wooden railings preserve the appearance of a traditional Japanese bridge. Whether framed by cherry blossoms, lush summer greenery, brilliant autumn leaves, or winter snow, Togetsukyo Bridge remains one of Kyoto’s most photogenic locations.
History
The origins of Togetsukyo Bridge date back more than a thousand years. According to tradition, Emperor Kameyama named the bridge after watching the full moon appear to cross the mountains above it, inspiring the name “Moon-Crossing Bridge.”
The present bridge was completed in 1934. Modern engineering was combined with traditional aesthetics, allowing the bridge to retain its historic appearance while providing greater durability.
