Okazaki Shrine

Shrine

Okazaki Shrine is a charming Shinto shrine located in Kyoto’s Okazaki district. It is best known as the “Rabbit Shrine” thanks to the many rabbit statues found throughout its peaceful grounds.

The shrine is especially popular with visitors praying for fertility, safe childbirth, and happy relationships. Its convenient location near Heian Shrine, Nanzen-ji Temple, and the Philosopher’s Path makes it an easy stop while exploring eastern Kyoto.

History

Okazaki Shrine is believed to have been founded in 794 when Kyoto became Japan’s capital. It was established to protect the eastern side of the new capital as one of several guardian shrines.

The surrounding area was once home to many wild rabbits, which gradually became regarded as sacred messengers of the shrine’s deities. Today, rabbits remain the shrine’s beloved symbol.

Seasonal Beauty

Cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, and colorful autumn leaves create beautiful scenery throughout the year.

Excellent Sightseeing Location

Okazaki Shrine is within walking distance of Heian Shrine, the Philosopher’s Path, Nanzen-ji Temple, and several museums, making it easy to include in a full day of sightseeing.

Visit Tips

Many visitors combine Okazaki Shrine with nearby attractions such as Heian Shrine, Nanzen-ji Temple, and the Philosopher’s Path. The shrine is usually quieter than Kyoto’s larger temples, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
