Kinkaku-ji Temple

Temple World Heritage

Kinkaku-ji Temple, officially known as Rokuon-ji, is a Zen temple located in northern Kyoto. The temple is famous for its Golden Pavilion, a three-story structure covered in gold leaf that has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Japan.

Standing beside Kyoko-chi (Mirror Pond), the pavilion creates a stunning reflection on the water’s surface. In 1994, Kinkaku-ji was designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.”

History

Kinkaku-ji originated as Kitayama Palace, the retirement villa of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate. Following his death in 1408, the villa was converted into a Zen temple according to his wishes.

The temple’s official name, Rokuon-ji, comes from Yoshimitsu’s posthumous Buddhist name. The current Golden Pavilion was rebuilt in 1955 after the original structure was destroyed by fire in 1950.

Highlights

The Golden Pavilion

The temple’s most famous attraction is the Golden Pavilion itself. Covered in gold leaf on its upper floors, it is one of Kyoto’s most photographed landmarks.

Kyoko-chi (Mirror Pond)

The pond surrounding the pavilion beautifully reflects the golden structure and surrounding landscape. On calm days, visitors can enjoy the famous “upside-down Kinkaku” reflection.

Traditional Garden

The strolling garden surrounding the pavilion offers changing views of the building from different angles, making every season unique.

Visit Tips

Kinkaku-ji is one of Kyoto’s most popular tourist destinations and can become crowded throughout the day. Visitors who wish to enjoy a quieter atmosphere should arrive shortly after opening time.

The walking route through the temple grounds is one-way. While the main viewing area near Mirror Pond is the most popular photo spot, visitors can also enjoy beautiful views of the pavilion from several locations along the pathway.
