Shoren-in Monzeki Temple

Shoren-in Monzeki is one of Kyoto’s most prestigious temple complexes and one of the three principal Monzeki temples of the Tendai school, where members of the imperial family traditionally served as head priests. Nestled at the foot of the Higashiyama mountains near Chion-in Temple, it is celebrated for its elegant gardens, refined architecture, and peaceful atmosphere.

History

Shoren-in traces its origins to a monks’ residence founded by Saichō on Mount Hiei during the early Heian period. The temple later moved to its present location in Higashiyama and became an important Monzeki temple, where imperial princes frequently served as abbots.

The temple also played an important historical role after the Great Tenmei Fire of 1788, when Emperor Go-Sakuramachi temporarily used Shoren-in as an imperial residence following the destruction of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. This close relationship with the imperial court remains one of the temple’s defining characteristics.
