Tentoku-in Temple

Temple

Tentoku-in is a sub-temple of Tofuku-ji Temple and is affectionately known as the “Bellflower Temple” for its spectacular display of kikyo (Chinese bellflowers) that bloom each summer. Although usually closed to the public, the temple opens during special seasonal exhibitions, attracting visitors with its elegant Zen garden and peaceful atmosphere.

Small and intimate, Tentoku-in offers a different experience from the grand buildings of nearby Tofuku-ji. Its carefully maintained garden, traditional architecture, and seasonal flowers create one of Kyoto’s most charming hidden temple settings.

History

Tentoku-in was founded in 1391 by the Zen monk Mumu Issei, the 131st chief priest of Tofuku-ji Temple. Despite periods of decline caused by wars and natural disasters, the temple has preserved its Zen traditions for more than six centuries.

In recent decades, Tentoku-in has become especially well known for its seasonal public openings, when visitors can admire the temple’s famous bellflowers in early summer and colorful maple leaves in autumn. Evening illuminations during these special exhibitions add an extra layer of beauty to the tranquil garden.

Visit Tips

Tentoku-in is best explored together with nearby Tofuku-ji, Komyo-in, and Funda-in. Together, these temples offer an excellent introduction to Zen gardens and the quiet beauty of Kyoto’s temple culture.
