Tofuku-ji Temple

Tofuku-ji Temple is one of Kyoto’s most important Zen temples and the head temple of the Tofuku-ji branch of the Rinzai school. Founded in the thirteenth century, it is counted among the Kyoto Gozan (Five Great Zen Temples) and is celebrated for its magnificent architecture, tranquil gardens, and spectacular autumn scenery.

The temple’s vast grounds include impressive wooden halls, the National Treasure Sanmon Gate, and the famous Tsutenkyo Bridge, where thousands of maple trees create one of Kyoto’s most breathtaking autumn landscapes. Visitors can also enjoy fresh greenery in spring and beautifully designed Zen gardens throughout the year.

History

Construction of Tofuku-ji began in 1236 under the patronage of the powerful statesman Kujo Michiie and was completed in 1255. The temple was named by combining the first characters of Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji, two of Nara’s great temples, reflecting the founder’s ambition to create one of Japan’s leading Buddhist institutions. The first abbot was Enni Ben’en (Shoichi Kokushi), a Zen master who introduced important teachings from Song China.

Although many buildings were destroyed by fires over the centuries, much of the temple complex was carefully rebuilt. In the twentieth century, landscape architect Mirei Shigemori designed the celebrated Hojo Gardens, masterpieces that combine traditional Zen aesthetics with bold modern design and are now recognized internationally as icons of Japanese garden art.

During the autumn foliage season, Tofuku-ji becomes one of Kyoto’s busiest attractions, so arriving early in the morning is highly recommended. Spring and early summer offer a quieter experience, allowing visitors to appreciate the temple’s architecture and gardens at a relaxed pace.
