Toji-in Temple

Toji-in Temple is a historic Zen temple in northern Kyoto best known as the family temple and burial site of Ashikaga Takauji, the founder of the Muromachi Shogunate. Located near Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji, and Ninna-ji, the temple offers visitors a peaceful setting to explore the history of medieval Japan.

Unlike many of Kyoto’s more crowded temples, Toji-in provides a quiet atmosphere where visitors can appreciate elegant gardens, traditional architecture, and the legacy of the Ashikaga shoguns. Its beautiful pond garden is particularly admired for its seasonal beauty throughout the year.

History

Toji-in was founded in 1341 by Ashikaga Takauji, who invited the celebrated Zen master Muso Soseki to serve as its founding priest. After Takauji’s death in 1358, the temple became his family temple and the burial place of successive Ashikaga shoguns.

Today, the temple preserves the graves of Ashikaga Takauji together with memorials to many of the later shoguns of the Muromachi period. Because of this close association with the Ashikaga family, Toji-in is considered one of Kyoto’s most important historical sites for understanding the political and cultural development of medieval Japan.

The temple’s celebrated pond garden is traditionally attributed to Muso Soseki, one of Japan’s greatest Zen garden designers, and remains an outstanding example of Muromachi-period landscape design.
