Taizo-in Temple (Myoshin-ji)

Taizo-in is one of the most celebrated sub-temples of Myoshin-ji, the head temple of the Myoshin-ji branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Founded in 1404, it is admired for its elegant Zen gardens, peaceful atmosphere, and close association with one of Japan’s greatest masterpieces of ink painting, the Hyonen-zu (Catching a Catfish with a Gourd).

Although located within the vast Myoshin-ji complex, Taizo-in has its own distinctive character. Visitors can enjoy beautifully maintained gardens throughout the year, making it one of the finest places in Kyoto to experience the harmony between Zen philosophy, landscape design, and traditional Japanese art.

History

Taizo-in was established in 1404 with the Zen monk Muin Soin as its founding abbot. Over the centuries, it grew into one of the most important sub-temples within the Myoshin-ji complex.

The temple is best known for its connection with the National Treasure Hyonen-zu, painted by the Zen monk and artist Josetsu during the Muromachi period. The painting, depicting a man attempting to catch a catfish with a gourd, illustrates a famous Zen paradox and is regarded as Japan’s earliest surviving masterpiece of ink painting. The original is now preserved at the Kyoto National Museum, while the temple displays reproductions and related materials.

Another highlight is Yoko-en Garden, a beautiful strolling garden designed in the twentieth century by the renowned landscape architect Kinsaku Nakane, whose work harmoniously blends traditional aesthetics with modern garden design.
