Yokihi Kannon-do Hall

Temple

Yokihi Kannon-do Hall is a small but highly revered hall within the grounds of Sennyu-ji Temple. It enshrines the famous Yokihi Kannon, a graceful image of Avalokitesvara (Kannon) said to resemble the legendary Chinese beauty Yang Guifei (Yokihi in Japanese). The statue has long attracted worshippers praying for beauty, happy relationships, safe childbirth, and good health.

Although modest in size, the hall is one of Sennyu-ji’s most distinctive places of worship. Its peaceful atmosphere and elegant Buddhist image make it a favorite destination for visitors interested in both religious art and the cultural connections between Japan and China.

History

According to temple tradition, the statue of Yokihi Kannon was brought to Japan from Song-dynasty China and became famous because its graceful appearance reminded viewers of Yang Guifei, the celebrated beauty of the Tang dynasty. Over the centuries, it has become one of Sennyu-ji’s most treasured objects of devotion.

As the Imperial Temple, Sennyu-ji maintained close cultural ties with China and played an important role in introducing Song Buddhist traditions to Japan. The Yokihi Kannon remains an enduring symbol of these artistic and spiritual exchanges, combining Chinese elegance with Japanese Buddhist faith.
