Sannenzaka, also known as Sannei-zaka, is one of Kyoto’s most famous historic streets leading to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Together with nearby Ninenzaka, this beautifully preserved stone-paved slope is lined with traditional wooden townhouses, souvenir shops, cafés, tea houses, and local confectionery stores, creating one of the city’s most iconic sightseeing areas.
Walking along Sannenzaka offers classic views of old Kyoto, with charming architecture and glimpses of Yasaka Pagoda in the distance. Whether you’re visiting for sightseeing, shopping, or photography, it is an essential stop when exploring Higashiyama.
History
Sannenzaka has served as an important approach to Kiyomizu-dera Temple for centuries. Its traditional name, Sannei-zaka (“Safe Childbirth Slope”), is believed to originate from pilgrims who visited Koyasu Pagoda to pray for safe childbirth.
The streetscape developed mainly during the Edo and Meiji periods and has been carefully preserved as part of an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Today, it remains one of Kyoto’s best examples of a historic merchant street.
