Hōkan-ji Temple (Yasaka Pagoda)

Temple

Hōkan-ji Temple is best known for the iconic Yasaka Pagoda, one of Kyoto’s most recognizable landmarks. Rising about 46 meters above the historic streets of Higashiyama, the five-story pagoda has become a symbol of Kyoto and is one of the city’s most photographed sights.

Surrounded by traditional wooden buildings, stone-paved lanes, and preserved historic streets, the pagoda creates a timeless scene that perfectly captures the atmosphere of old Kyoto. It is an essential stop for visitors exploring the Higashiyama district.

History

According to tradition, Hōkan-ji Temple was founded around 592 by Prince Shōtoku. Throughout its long history, the temple was repeatedly destroyed by fires and warfare before being rebuilt several times.

The present five-story pagoda dates from 1440, when it was reconstructed with the support of Ashikaga Yoshinori, the sixth shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. Today it remains one of Kyoto’s most enduring historical landmarks.
