Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine is one of the most important shrines dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the revered deity of learning and scholarship. Located in Nagaokakyo City, just southwest of Kyoto, the shrine is believed to stand on the site where Michizane stopped to bid farewell to the capital before his exile to Dazaifu.
The spacious shrine grounds are especially famous for their spectacular avenue of Kirishima azaleas, which burst into brilliant crimson each spring. Combined with the tranquil Hachijo-ga-Ike Pond, the shrine is one of the finest places in the Kyoto area to enjoy seasonal flowers and peaceful scenery.
History
According to tradition, Nagaoka Tenmangu originated in 903, when Sugawara no Michizane paused here on his journey into exile at Dazaifu. After his death, local people built a small shrine in his memory, eventually developing into the present Tenmangu.
Over the centuries, the shrine received support from local rulers and members of the imperial family. The present main sanctuary, completed by relocating the former main hall of Heian Jingu in 1941, is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property by Kyoto Prefecture.
Today, the shrine attracts students and families seeking blessings for academic success, good fortune, and protection from misfortune.
