Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine is a lively shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, located at the eastern entrance to Kyoto’s famous Nishiki Market. Affectionately known as “Nishiki no Tenjin-san,” the shrine has long protected the bustling shopping district and its merchants.
Although surrounded by the vibrant streets of downtown Kyoto, the shrine offers a peaceful place to pray for academic success, prosperity in business, and good fortune. Its unique urban setting and distinctive architecture make it one of Kyoto’s most memorable shrines.
History
Nishiki Tenmangu was founded in 1003 on land traditionally believed to have been the residence of Sugawara no Michizane.
The shrine originally occupied a much larger site, but its grounds were reduced over the centuries as Kyoto developed into a modern city. Despite these changes, it has continued to serve as the guardian shrine of Nishiki Market and one of the city’s most popular Tenmangu shrines.
Today, the shrine remains closely connected with the merchants of Nishiki Market and welcomes countless visitors throughout the year.
