Eikando Zenrin-ji Temple

Temple

Eikando Zenrin-ji is one of Kyoto’s most celebrated temples, especially famous for its spectacular autumn colors. Often called “Eikando of the Maple Leaves,” it attracts visitors from around the world during the fall season.

Located near Nanzen-ji Temple and the Philosopher’s Path, the temple features beautiful gardens, historic halls, and scenic viewpoints. Its peaceful atmosphere and seasonal beauty make it a favorite destination throughout the year.

History

The temple was founded in 853 as a Shingon Buddhist temple. It later became associated with the monk Eikan, whose devotion to Pure Land Buddhism greatly influenced its development.

Eikando is best known for its unique statue of Amida Buddha, called the “Mikaeri Amida” or “Looking-Back Amida.” According to legend, the Buddha turned around while walking with Eikan, creating one of Japan’s most beloved Buddhist stories.

Highlights

Mikaeri Amida

The temple’s most famous treasure. This rare statue of Amida Buddha is depicted looking back over its shoulder, unlike most Buddhist statues in Japan.

Tahoto Pagoda

Situated on a hillside, this elegant pagoda offers beautiful views over Kyoto and the surrounding mountains.

Hojo Pond and Autumn Leaves

The pond garden becomes especially breathtaking during autumn when colorful maple leaves reflect on the water.

Miei-do Hall

A major worship hall dedicated to Honen, the founder of the Jodo sect, and an important spiritual center of the temple.

Garyuro Corridor

A graceful covered walkway that curves along the hillside, resembling a dragon resting on the ground.
