Hokongo-in Temple

Temple

Hokongo-in Temple is a peaceful Buddhist temple in Kyoto’s Hanazono district, best known as the “Temple of Lotus Flowers.” Every summer, its historic pond garden is covered with magnificent lotus blossoms, making it one of Kyoto’s finest places to appreciate these iconic flowers.

The temple is equally celebrated for its elegant Pure Land garden, a masterpiece of Heian-period landscape design. Combining a large pond, artificial waterfall, and carefully arranged hills, the garden was created to represent the beauty of the Buddhist paradise. Throughout the year, visitors can also enjoy weeping cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, hydrangeas, and colorful autumn foliage.

History

The origins of Hokongo-in date back to 830, when the site served as the country villa of the statesman Kiyohara no Natsuno. It was later converted into a Buddhist temple.

In 1130, the temple was extensively restored by Taikenmon-in Shoshi, consort of Emperor Toba and one of the most influential women of the late Heian period. She transformed the grounds into a magnificent Pure Land garden, reflecting the Buddhist vision of the Western Paradise.

Today, the garden is designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government and is considered one of the finest surviving examples of Heian-period landscape architecture.
