Hosen-in Temple is a peaceful sub-temple of Shorin-in in Ohara, best known for its breathtaking “framed garden” view and its magnificent 700-year-old five-needle pine tree. From the temple’s main hall, the pillars and beams naturally frame the garden like a living painting, creating one of Kyoto’s most celebrated garden scenes.
Visitors can quietly admire the garden while enjoying traditional matcha green tea and Japanese sweets, making Hosen-in one of the most relaxing temple experiences in Kyoto. Surrounded by the tranquil countryside of Ohara, the temple offers beautiful scenery throughout every season.
History
Hosen-in was established as a sub-temple of nearby Shorin-in, which has been an important center of Tendai Buddhism since the Heian period. The present buildings and gardens were largely developed during the Edo period and remain outstanding examples of traditional Japanese garden design.
The temple is also famous for its “Bloody Ceiling”, constructed from floorboards said to have come from Fushimi Castle after the Battle of Fushimi in 1600. According to tradition, the boards were preserved as a memorial to the samurai who lost their lives during the battle.
