Jisso-in Monzeki Temple

Jisso-in Monzeki is a prestigious Tendai Buddhist temple located in the quiet district of Iwakura, northern Kyoto. Closely associated with the Imperial family, the temple is celebrated for its breathtaking “Floor Maple” and “Floor Greenery” views, where polished black wooden floors reflect the surrounding gardens like a mirror.

The temple features two beautiful gardens, each offering a different atmosphere throughout the seasons. Combined with its elegant architecture and peaceful surroundings, Jisso-in has become one of Kyoto’s most admired hidden treasures.

History

Jisso-in was originally founded in 1229 by the monk Joki in Kyoto’s Murasakino district. After being destroyed during the Onin War, the temple was relocated to its present site in Iwakura during the late 17th century.

Because many of its chief priests were members of the Imperial family and aristocracy, Jisso-in became a distinguished Monzeki Temple, reflecting Kyoto’s close ties between Buddhism and the Imperial Court.

During the Edo period, the temple’s reception hall and gardens were carefully designed so that the highly polished lacquered floor would beautifully reflect the surrounding maple trees and fresh greenery. These spectacular reflections, known as “Yuka Momiji” (Floor Maple) and “Yuka Midori” (Floor Greenery), have become some of Kyoto’s most iconic seasonal views.

Visit Tips

Photography of the famous reflective floors is not permitted in order to preserve the temple’s historic interiors. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the scenery directly rather than through a camera.

While autumn is the busiest season, the fresh greenery of late spring offers an equally beautiful and quieter experience. Nearby attractions include the Iwakura Tomomi Historic Residence and Miyake Hachimangu Shrine, making Jisso-in an excellent destination for exploring northern Kyoto.
