Ryuhon-ji Temple

Temple

Ryuhon-ji Temple is one of the principal temples of the Nichiren sect, located in Kyoto’s historic Nishijin district. Founded in the early fifteenth century, the temple is especially famous for its spacious grounds and magnificent cherry blossoms, making it one of Kyoto’s finest hidden cherry blossom viewing spots.

Surrounded by quiet residential streets, the temple offers a peaceful atmosphere throughout the year. Historic halls, seasonal gardens, and centuries of Buddhist tradition combine to create an ideal destination for visitors seeking a more tranquil side of Kyoto.

History

Ryuhon-ji was founded in 1415 by the Nichiren priest Nichijitsu, a successor in the lineage established by Nichizo.

The temple was originally located elsewhere in Kyoto but was destroyed during periods of civil conflict, including the Onin War and the Tenmon Hokke Disturbance. It was later relocated to its present site during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s redevelopment of Kyoto.

Throughout the Edo period, Ryuhon-ji flourished as one of the major temples of the Nichiren sect and continues to preserve its long religious tradition today.
