Nijo Castle (Former Detached Palace Nijo Castle)

World Heritage

Nijo Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in central Kyoto. It was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu as his residence and political base in Kyoto and remains one of the most important historical sites from Japan’s Edo Period.

The castle is famous for Ninomaru Palace, beautiful gardens, and its role in the restoration of imperial rule. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the power and culture of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

History

Construction of Nijo Castle began in 1603 under Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate. It was later expanded by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu.

In 1867, Tokugawa Yoshinobu announced the restoration of political power to the Emperor at Ninomaru Palace, marking the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The castle later became an imperial villa before being opened to the public.
