Shogunzuka Seiryuden

Shogunzuka Seiryuden is a spectacular temple complex belonging to Shoren-in Monzeki, located near the summit of Kyoto’s eastern mountains. Famous for its breathtaking panoramic views, it offers one of the finest vantage points overlooking the entire Kyoto Basin.

The temple is home to an enormous wooden observation deck, peaceful gardens, and seasonal landscapes that change beautifully throughout the year. Visitors come not only for its religious significance but also to admire cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant autumn foliage, and some of Kyoto’s most impressive night views during special evening openings.

History

The name Shogunzuka originates from a legend dating to 794, when Emperor Kanmu established the new capital of Heian-kyo (Kyoto). According to tradition, a clay statue of a military general approximately 2.5 meters tall was buried beneath this hill to protect the new capital from misfortune. The mound has since been regarded as one of Kyoto’s important spiritual guardian sites.

The present Seiryuden was established in 2014 after relocating and restoring a historic building originally constructed in 1928. It now serves as a principal prayer hall of Shoren-in Monzeki and houses the celebrated Blue Fudo Myo-o, a National Treasure that is displayed during special exhibitions.
