Urade Yama is one of the floats in Kyoto’s Gion Festival Early Festival (Saki Matsuri). The float commemorates the legendary episode in which Empress Jingu caught a sweetfish (ayu) to divine the outcome of her military expedition, making it a symbol of good fortune and successful beginnings.
Dedicated to Empress Jingu, Urade Yama has long been associated with blessings for safe childbirth, fertility, and good luck. During the Yoiyama evenings, visitors can admire its elegant decorations and experience one of the festival’s most meaningful historical floats.
History
Urade Yama is based on a story recorded in the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan).
Before leading her legendary expedition to the Korean Peninsula, Empress Jingu is said to have performed a divination by fishing for sweetfish in the Matsuura River. Catching the fish was interpreted as a favorable omen, and the expedition was believed to have ended successfully.
The float’s name, Urade (“fortune telling” or “divination”), comes from this legendary event. Today, the float continues to honor Empress Jingu while symbolizing good fortune and successful endeavors.
