Grave of Sakamoto Ryoma

The Grave of Sakamoto Ryoma is located within the grounds of Kyoto Ryozen Gokoku Shrine, where one of Japan’s most influential figures of the late Edo period rests alongside his close ally Nakaoka Shintaro.

After Ryoma was assassinated at the Omiya Inn in Kyoto in 1867, he and Nakaoka were eventually reinterred on Mount Ryozen following the Meiji Restoration. Today, their graves attract visitors from across Japan and around the world who come to pay tribute to the visionary who helped shape modern Japan.

Surrounded by the peaceful hills of eastern Kyoto, the cemetery also offers sweeping views over the city below.

History

Sakamoto Ryoma (1836–1867) was a samurai from Tosa Domain whose ideas and political efforts played a pivotal role in the Meiji Restoration.

After leaving his domain, he studied under Katsu Kaishu, founded the Kaientai trading and naval organization, and helped broker the historic Satsuma–Choshu Alliance, which united two rival domains against the Tokugawa shogunate. He also outlined a vision for a modern nation in his famous political proposal known as the Eight-Point Program While Aboard Ship.

On December 10, 1867 (November 15 by the old Japanese calendar), Ryoma was assassinated together with Nakaoka Shintaro at the Omiya Inn in Kyoto. Following the Meiji Restoration, their remains were transferred to Mount Ryozen, where they continue to be honored as two of the nation’s most celebrated restoration leaders.
